THE MAIN ISLANDS OF JAPAN
The four main islands of Japan are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku. Honshu literally meaning "Main State" is the largest island of Japan, called the Mainland. It is south of Hokkaido across the Tsugaru Strait, north of Shikoku across the Inland Sea, and northeast of Kyushu across the Kanmon Strait. It is the seventh largest island, and the second most populous island in the world after Java. The island is roughly 1300 km long and ranges from 50 to 230 km wide, and its total area is 230,500 kmē, around 60% of the total area of Japan. It is larger than the island of Great Britain, and slightly larger than the state of Minnesota. Honshu has 5450 km of coastline.Hokkaido literal meaning, "North Sea Route", was formerly known as Ezo, is the second largest island and largest prefecture of Japan. The Tsugaru Strait separates it from Honshu, although it is connected to Honshu by the underwater Seikan Tunnel. The largest city on Hokkaido is the prefectural capital, Sapporo.
Kyushu is the third largest island of Japan and most southerly and westerly of the four main islands. It is considered the birthplace of the Japanese civilization. Its alternate ancient names include Kyukoku, Chinzei, and Tsukushi-no-shima. The ancient region Saikaido consists of Kyushu and its surrounding islands.
Shikoku is the smallest and least populous, around 4,141,955 of population, of the four main islands of Japan. Its ancient names include Iyo-no-futana-shima, Iyo-shima , and Futana-shima. The current name refers to the four old provinces which made up the island: Awa, Iyo, Sanuki, and Tosa.
