THE HISTORY OF JAPAN
The written history of Japan began with brief appearances in Chinese history texts from the first century CE. However, archaeological research indicates that people were living on the islands of Japan as early as the upper paleolithic period. Following the last ice-age, around 12,000 BC, the rich ecosystem of the Japanese Archipelago fostered human development, yielding the earliest known pottery during the Jomon period. Japanese history has alternating periods of long isolation punctuated by radical, often revolutionary, influences from the outside world. The Japanese Paleolithic covers a period from around 100,000 BC, the date of the earliest stone tool implements that have been found, to around 12,000 BC, at the end of the last ice age, which corresponds to the beginning of the Mesolithic Jomon Period. The Japanese paleolithic is characterized by the appearance of the earliest polished stone tools in the world, around 30,000 BC.
The passed period of Japan were Jomon Period, Yayoi Period, Yamato Period, Nara Period, Heian Period, Kamakura Period, Muromachi Period, Azuchi-Momoyama Period, and Edo Period. Today is the Heisei Era and Japan is ruled by Emperor Akihito.
