SULTAN SALAHUDDIN ABDUL AZIZ SHAH MOSQUE
On the 14th February 1974, Malaysia's Sultan of Selangor, His Highness Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, declared that a State Mosque was to be built, which was to be completed on the 11th March, 1988 as the beautiful National Mosque we see today in Malaysia's capital city of Kuala Lumpur.The Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque has the tallest minaret and has the largest religious dome ever built in the world to date. As it is presently the largest mosque in Southeast Asia, with the ability to accommodate a maximum of 24,000 people, this magnificent place of worship plays a huge role in the presence of Islam in the South-East Asian region.
The mosque occupies three floors. Offices, conference rooms, a library, reception rooms and classrooms are located on the ground floor. The fine wool carpet lines what is one of the largest prayer halls in the world. The main prayer hall is on the first floor and the gallery on the second floor. It has two levels, with the upper gallery level reserved for Sisters only.
The double-layered space frame Dome soars up to 350 feet above ground and is 170 feet in diameter, becoming the largest religious dome ever built in the world to date. To match the majestic size of the dome, four minarets were built. They are positioned at the corners, guarding the Dome, and rising over 460 feet, marking them the tallest in the world to date.
