ZOO NEGARA, THE NATIONAL ZOO OF MALAYSIA
Zoo Negara is the national zoo of Malaysia. The Zoo was officially opened on November 14, 1963. It covers 110 acres of land located beside Taman Melawati, 5 kilometres north-east of Kuala Lumpur. 'Zoo Negara by Day' is open daily from 9.00am – 5.00pm. 'Zoo Negara by Night' is open on weekends and Malaysian Public Holidays from 5.00pm – 10.30pm. Zoo Negara Malaysia is managed by the Malaysian Zoological Society, a non-governmental organization established to create the first local zoo for Malaysians. Over the years, the zoo has transformed itself to an open concept zoo with over 90% of its animals kept in spacious exhibits with landscape befitting its nature. There are over 4000 animals from more than 400 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. There are 16 exhibits in total and the exhibits are of Reptile Park, Monkey/Lesser Apes, Malaysian Elephants, Lake Birds, Bird Aviary, Nocturnal Exhibits, Wallaby/Kangaroo/Pademelon, Humbolt Penguin, Children's World, Bear Complex, Savannah Walk, Nile Hippopotamus, Mammal Kingdom, Freshwater Aquaria, Cat Walk, and Ape Centre.
The idea for a zoo was first mooted in 1957, when a miniature zoo was created by the Malayan Agri-Horticultural Association. These types of zoos became greatly popular and the public voiced their wish for a permanent zoo. A spot was chosen for the permanent zoo at Ulu Klang, and with the support of the federal government, it was built. While the zoo is officially named Zoo Negara, it is also known as "Zoo in the Jungle".
