Myanmar

Myanmar lies at the crossroads of Asia’s greatest civilizations, China and India. Before 1989, Myanmar is known under different names: Suvanabhumi, Bermah, and Burma. It was well known for its ancient archaeology and rich culture. Myanmar stretches from the islands of the Andaman Sea in the south, right up into the Eastern Himalayan mountain range, giving a variety of marvellous people and enriched nature.

Burmese Cats

Animals resembling Burmese Cats existed hundreds of years ago in Thailand and Burma. Legends say that the Burmese were the traditional pets of Royalty and Nobility long before the Siamese. As was the Siamese, the Burmese were temple cats assigned a student monk to indulge their every whim. In the 19th century they were known in England as Chocolate Siamese, but the Burmese cat breed died out there. Their coats are very short, satin-like in texture, and generally require little grooming other than daily petting. Burmese have large, expressive eyes that are great pools of innocence and seductive appeal, irresistible in effect.

Philippines2

The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel Quezon was elected President and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Philippines attained their independence. The 21-year rule of Ferdinand Marcos ended in 1986, when a widespread popular rebellion forced him into exile and installed Corazon Aquino as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel Ramos was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph Estrada was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, in January 2001 after Estrada's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and widespread demonstrations led to his ouster. Macapagal Arroyo was elected to a six-year term in May 2004. The Philippine Government faces threats from armed communist insurgencies and from Muslim separtists in the south.

Ecology & Environment

From the snow-capped Himalayas in the north to the coral-fringed Mergui Archipelago in the south, Myanmar's 2000-km length crosses three distinct ecological regions within the vast Indo-Malay bio geographic realm: the Indian sub region along the Bangladesh and India borders; the Indochinese sub region in the north bordering Laos and China; and the Syndic sub region bordering peninsular Thailand. Together these regions produce what is quite likely the richest biodiversity in South-East Asia.

The endangered Gurney's Pitta have been found in southern Myanmar near Linya National Park, in the Ngawun Reserve Forest. Bird Life International, Biodiversity And Nature Conservation Association together with the Ministry of Forestry has found the largest group of Gurney's Pitta in Myanmar. They found about 150 of these birds in the same place.

Laos was under the control of Siam (Thailand) from the late 18th century until the late 19th century when it became part of French Indochina. The Franco-Siamese Treaty of 1907 defined the current Lao border with Thailand. In 1975, the Communist Pathet Lao took control of the government, ending a six-century-old monarchy. Initial closer ties to Vietnam and socialization were replaced with a gradual return to private enterprise, a liberalization of foreign investment laws, and the admission into ASEAN in 1997.
