In 1957 it was demolished and rebuilt to this structure in 1966. The pagoda is on Shwegondine Rd, only a short distance beyond the Shwedagon Pagoda. This reclining Buddha is similar to the Reclining Buddha Image of Bago.
The image has an enigmatic smile on his delicate lips. It is one of the largest images in Myanmar and especially famous for the 108 distinguishing marks or symbols on the soles of his two huge feet. Each mark describes the lifes of Buddha before becoming the enlightened one. There are many monasteries surrounding the Reclining Image.
