Vice-Senior General Maung Aye inspects Ayeyawady River Bridge (Magway), New Magway Airport, Paunglaung Multi-Purpose Dam projects

Public Works engineers urged to find better ways to build better bridges
Ayeyawady River Bridge (Magway) to be opened soon

Yangon, 12 Nov - Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) Vice-Senior General Maung Aye inspected progress in building the Ayeyawady River Bridge (Magway), the New Magway Airport Project and the Paunglaung Multi-Purpose Dam Project today.

Vice-Senior General Maung Aye visited the projects together with Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt. On arrival at Magway Airport at 8.15 am. During inspection of the Ayeyawady River Bridge (Magway), where flooring was completed, the Vice-Senior General and party heard a report on the salient points of the project starting from finding of the axis to building of the bridge presented by the Construction Minister.

Chief Engineer (Bridge) U Han Zaw reported to the Vice-Senior General and party on construction of the approach structures and the main bridge in accord with the set standards, the amount of cement, and fuel and the number of steel rods used in building the bridge and preparations being made to open the facility. Then, the Transport Minister explained the current of the river at the bridge.

The Secretary-1 spoke of the need to make arrangements to constantly survey the current, to ensure safety of the boats and to prevent bank erosion. Brig-Gen Ye Myint and Col Zaw Min gave a supplementary report. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye said the engineers of Public Works have gained much experience in bridge building, and they have become skilful in the task. They should always strive to find better ways to build better bridges and should keep complete records on the bridge projects. Collective efforts are required to increase the use of locally-made parts in building bridges in the future.

The Vice-Senior General and party looked into the requirements in making the preparations to hold the bridge opening ceremony on Magway bank. After inspecting the bridge, they attended to the needs in making arrangements to hold the opening ceremony on Minbu bank and viewed the final touches of the project including the progress in laying tar on the road of the approach structure and the main bridge. The inauguration of the Ayeyawady Bridge (Mag-way) constructed by Myanmar engineers will be held soon.

Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party went to the construction site of new Magway Airport. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party heard a report on the new Magway Airport construction project and progress of work by Minister Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe. Managing Director of Asia World Co Ltd U Tun Myint Naing reported on ground levelling for the new airport, progress of work, laying concrete on the runway, construction of apron and the airport terminal. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye gave instructions on completion of the runway in time and construction of the airport terminal. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party inspected scale model of the new Magway Airport. The Vice-Senior General then signed in the visitors' book.

The Vice-Senior General and party inspected laying of 8-inch thick concrete on the runway and laying of 14-inch thick surface. The 8,900 feet runway is now under construction. At 11.30 am, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party went by helicopter to the site of Paunglaung Multi-Purpose Dam Project in Pyinmana Township, Yamethin District, Mandalay Division.

They were welcomed by Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin, Minister for Electric Power Maj-Gen Tin Htut, Deputy Minister U Myo Myint and officials. Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin reported on construction of the main dam and spillways, progress of work and supply of machinery. Deputy Minister U Myo Myint reported on construction of the diversion tunnel and power intake and underground power station and progress of work.

Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut reported on arrival of equipment from abroad, supply of fuel and cement, power supply and construction of the sub-power station and progress of work. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye then gave instructions. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party inspected construction of the main dam and underground power station. The Paunglaung multi-purpose Dam project is being implemented on Paunglaung River, 10 miles east of Pyinmana.

The 3,100 feet long and 430 feet high dam is under construction. On completion, it will prevent flooding the Paunglaung river and irrigate 35,000 acres of farmlands. The four turbines of the underground power station will generate 280 megawatts. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party then went to Toungoo by helicopter and arrived back here in the evening.

Ceremony to offer Kathina robes donated by King of Thailand held

Yangon, 12 Nov - A ceremony to offer Kathina robes donated by the King of Thailand was held at Maha Visuddhayon Kyaungtaik in Nandawin Street, Bahan Township at 9 am today.

First, Minister U Aung Khin and Permanent Secre- tary Mr Tej Bunnag ignited the lights. Next~ Mr Tej Bunnag offered Shwekya Thingan to the Buddha Image.

The ceremony was then opened with the three-time recitation of Namo Tassa and State Ovadacariya Joint Shwekyin Sasanabaing Abhidhaja Maha Ratthaguru Bahan Township Sirimanta Sankyaung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Rajindha Bhivamsa administered the Five Precepts to the congregation. Then the Sayadaws and members of the Sangha recited parittas.

On behalf of the King of Thailand, Permanent Secretary Mr Tej Bunnag presented Kathina robes and offertories to the Yaw Sayadaw. The minister, the deputy minister and Thai Ambassador Mr Oum Maolanon, departmental heads, officials and wellwishers donated offertories to the Sayadaws. Mr Tej Bunnag supplicated on the purpose of the donations and handed over Baht 10,000 donated by the King of Thailand to the minister.

Mr Oum Maolanon and an official of Thai Embassy presented US$ 4,651 donated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and US$ 2,996 donated by the King of Thailand to offer Kathina robes receptively to the minister. Then, an official of Thai Embassy presented K 922,200, baht 2,400, US$ 100 and FEC 100 donated by the wellwishers of Thailand who are currently here; and TMCECA Secretary-General Gen Sanan Kajornklam K 1 million donated by the association.

The deputy minister accepted the donations. Yaw Sayadaw delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained and the ceremony ended with the three-time recitation of Buddha Sasanam Ciramtitthatu. Later, soon was offered to the Sayadaws and members of the Sanhga.

Commander attends 4th communal Kathina robes offering ceremony

Yangon, 12 Nov - Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe attended the 4th communal Kathina robes offering ceremony held at Kanmyint Monastery on Thirimingala Street in Aungchantha Ward, Sangyaung Township, Yangon West District, this morning and presented robes and offertories to the Sayadaws.

First, the congregation received the Five Precepts from Bhaddanta Silavamsa. Next, the Sayadaw and members of the Sangha recited parittas. Then, the commander and wellwishers presented Kathina robes and offertories to the members of the Sangha.

Later, Secretary of State Maha Nayaka Committee Ahhidaja ,Maharatthaguru Ahhidhaja Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Sayadaw of Maha Visuddayama Monastery Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumaraka delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained.

Ministry of Home Affairs offers Kathina robes

Yangon, 12 Nov - The Ministry of Home Affairs held its ninth collective Kathina robes offering ceremony at the ministry this morning, attended by Minister for Home Affairs Col Tin Hlaing and wife Daw Khin Khin Hla.

The minister and his wife offered Kathina robes to Bahan Township Sangha Nayaka Committee Chairman Sayadaw Agga Maha Gandhavacaka Pandita Bhaddanta Nandiya and heads of department and their wives offered Kathina robes and provisions to members of the Sangha. Then, Joint-Secretary of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhammajotika dhaja Yenangyoung Sayadaw Bhaddanta Tejaniya delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained.

Afterwards, "soon" was offered to members of the Sangha.

Kathina robes offered

Yangon, 12 Nov - The Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs held Kathina robes offering ceremony under the patronage of Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt and wife Daw Kyin Khine at the National Races Development (Tiger) Parahita School on Kamayut Station Road in Hline Township here this morning.

Vice-Chairman of State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddammajotika dhaja Bhaddanta Kesara invested the congregation with the Five Precepts. Then, the minister and his wife offered Kathina robes to Presiding Sayadaw of the monastery Abhidhaja Agga Maha Saddammajotika Bhaddanta Pandita and offertories to Bhaddanta Kumara (Magway Sayadaw). Next, the deputy ministers and officials presented Kathina robes and offertories to members of the Sangha.

Afterwards, Bhaddanta Kumara (Magway Sayadaw) delivered a sermon, followed by sharing of merits gained. After the ceremony, "soon" was offered to members of the Sangha.

Agreement on Myanmar-Korea Economic Cooperation signed

Yangon, 12 Nov- A ceremony to sign an agreement on Myanmar-Korea Economic Cooperation washeld at Zaykabar Hall ofIMirig.atadon Garden City this morning.

Dr Kin Jung Ho explained matters related to future tasks for Myanmar-Korea Sports and Economic Cooperation.Then, Chairman of NEH Ltd Dr Khin Shwe and Chairman of Hanji Corporation Dr Kin Jung Ho signed an agreement on Myanmar- Korea Economic Cooperation and exchanged the documents.

The ceremony came to an end after the speech of the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Myanmar.

Health Minister receives Malaysian counterpart Mutual cooperation in health sector discussed

Yangon, 12 Nov - Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein received the visiting Malaysian delegation led by Malaysian Health Minister Mr Dato' Chua Jui Meng, to cooperate in development of traditional medicine between the two countries, at the meeting hall of the ministry on Pyidaungsu Yeiktha Road in Dagon Township this morning.

Then, Director-General of the Health Planning Department Dr Kyi Soe also briefed the guests on the policy of the NHC and tasks being carried out in accord with the health development programmes, cooperation with international communities and NGOs; Director-General of the Medical Science Department Professor Dr Maung Maung Wint on the set-up of the department, the conducting of courses, and endeavours for medical development; Director-General of Medical Research Department Professor Dr Paing Soe on the set-up of the department, research on common diseases of Myanmar; and Deputy Director-General of the Health Department Dr Soe Aung on the set-up of the department, and public health care activities.

Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein and his Malaysian counterpart and officials cordially discussed matters related to mutual cooperation in the health sector. After the Malaysian Health Minister spoke words of thanks, the meeting came to an end.

 Next, the Malaysian minister and party, accompanied by Deputy Minister Professor Dr Kyaw Myint, arrived at Yangon Traditional Medicine Hospital in Bahan Township.

At the meeting hall of the hospital, Director-General of the Traditional Medicine Department Professor Dr Thein Swe reported on the historical background of Myanmar traditional medicine, tasks for the development of the traditional medicine, the set-up of the department, the emergence of the hospital and the university of traditional medicine, and public health care activities with the use of traditional medicine.

Later, Director-General of the Traditional Medicine Department Dr Sein Win also reported on traditional medicine laws, and Director of Food and Drug Administration Department Dr Soe Myat Tun on registration of food and traditional medicine industries.

Professor Dr Kyaw Myint and Professor Dr Thein Swe replied to queries raised by the Malaysian minister and party. Then, the Malaysian minister presented Professor Dr Thein Swe a book on herbal plants grown in Malaysia and signed in the visitors' book.

He also met with U Ba Thein, a traditional medicine practitioner. Professor Dr Thein Swe and medical superintendent Dr Thein Kyaw conducted the Malaysian minister and party round the women's ward, monks' ward, men's ward, and in-patient ward at the hospital.

They also viewed the practical treatment with the use of Myanmar traditional medicine. In the evening, Maj-Gen Ket Sein hosted a dinner in honour of the visiting Malaysian minister and party at Karaweik Palace.

Supervisory Committee for Export/Import meets 

Yangon, 12 Nov - The coordination meeting of the Supervisory Committee for Export/Import and business entrepreneurs was held at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Commerce at 3 pm today.

Chairman Minister Lt- Gen Min Thein made an opening speech. Those present reported on difficulties encountered in carrying out the tasks of export and import. Then, Ministers Brig- Gen Pyi Sone and Llig-Gen Maung Maung Thein took part in the discussions. The ceremony then came to a close with the concluding remarks by the chairman.

On-job training Course concludes

Yangon, 12 Nov - On-job training Course No 2/2002 conducted by Ministry of Industry-1 concluded this morning at the training hall of the ministry here. Minister for Industry-1 U Aung Thaung made an address at the concluding ceremony and presented prizes and certificates to the trainees. A total of 44 trainees attended the six-week course.

Minister for Information inspects Transmission  tasks Yegu Station

Yangon, 12 Nov - Minister for Information ,Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan inspected the tasks being carried out for the improvement of Myanma radio and television programmes at KabaAye Yegu Transmission Station in Mayangon-Township this afternoon.

Next, MRTV Director- General U Khin Maung Htay reported to the minister on conditions of machines at the station and use of electricity .The Minister gave instructions on installation of machines, condition of present transmission and efficient use of electricity in carrying out transmission works.

Then, he inspected round the new and old stations.

Prizes presented to first Sayawun Tin Shwe Literary Award winners

Yangon, 12 Nov - The ceremony to present prizes to the winners of the first Sayawun Tin Shwe Literary Awards was held at the MICT Park in Hline Township this morning.

Chairman of MWJA U Hla Myaing (Ko Hsaung) made an opening speech and Chairman of the Scrutinizing Committee U Myo Thant (Maung Hsu Shin) reported on the matters related to the scrutinizing of the literary works. Then, prizes were given away to the winners. Chairman U Myo Thant (Maung Hsu Shin) presented the belles letters award to Pakokku U Ohn Pe for "Twaeya-kyonya-kyundaw-bawa (My experiences)" and wife of late Sayawun Tin Shwe, Daw Aye Thant, the general knowledge award to U Thein Khine (Asia Wealth Bank) for "Naingngan-taka-ban-lokngan (International banking services - Laws and Procedures)".

Then, Daw Aye Thant presented gifts to members of the Scrutinizing Committee and contestants to the literary awards. Afterwards, Minister for Education (Retd) Professor (Psychology) Dr Kyaw Sein explained matters related to the scrutinizing of the literary works. Daw Aye Thant spoke words of thanks and the ceremony came to a close. The Sayawun Tin Shwe Literary Awards were established to present literary awards under the patronage of the MWJA by the family members of late Writer Sayawun Tin Shwe who had strong attachment to literary tasks and performed literary services.

Non-fiction books published in 2002 may be submitted for the award to the committee.

Drugs

Drugs refining paraphernalia seized

Yangon, 12 Nov - A combined team comprising local Tatmadaw men, members of intelligence unit, MPF and Shan State Special Region-5, combed the areas of Panlway Village in Kutkai Township, Shan State, on 3 November.

The authorities seized three huts together with 1,368 litre of ether, 2304 litre of spirit, 36 litre of phosphate acid, 54 litre of kerosene, 5 kilo of sodium chloride, 100 kilo of lime, 21 karosene stoves, 26 steel frying pans (small), 45 glass steamers (small), 20 long glass-tubes, 35 short glass-tubes, 2 steel steamers, 10 pipes with a length of 10 yards, 35 curved glass-tubes, 25 plastic bowls (small) and 12 plastic containers (small) in the areas.

Action is being taken in connection with the seizure of the narcotic drugs and paraphernalia by the police station concerned.
