Secretary-1 receives Malaysian Health Minister and party
Yangon, 14 Nov - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council of the Union of Myanmar General Khin Nyunt received visiting Minister of Health of Malaysia Dato' Chua Jui Meng and party at Zeyathiri Beikman Hall on Konmyinttha here this morning.
Also present at the call together with the Secretary-1 were Minister for Foreign Affairs U Win Aung, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win and Director-General of the Protocol Department Thura U Aung Htet. The guests were accompanied by Charge d'Affaires ai of Malaysian Embassy in Yangon Mr Rustam Yahaya.

Yangon, 14 Nov - World Diabetes Day was observed at the University of Nursing here this afternoon with an address by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.Speaking on the occasion, the minister said World Diabetes Day was observed for the people to understand the task of health care activities concerning the diabetes, a rising concern in the present-day world. Although the rate of diabetes is greater in developed countries than that in developing countries at present, it is estimated that in the future the developing countries will suffer more from the disease. Ageing population, unhealthy diet, obesity and sedentary lifestyle are the causes leading to occurrence of the diabetes. The motto of this year's World Diabetes Day is "Your eyes and diabetes: don't lose sight of the risks".
Myanmar observed the Day with the aim of disseminating the knowledge on the disease on a wider scale and rendering assistance to the Diabetes Control and Prevention Project. The Project, covered by the National Health Plan (1993-1996) has been launched in Myanmar. According to the world-wide research finds, occurrence of the diabetes especially the Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented, with primary prevention, active lifestyle, regular exercise, obesity prevention, saturated fat reduction and dietary fibre consumption as main methods.
The Ministry of Health is preventing and controlling the disease in cooperation with WHO. Diabetes patients and their relatives, those who are interested in preventing and eradicating the disease and the entire public are required to join hands with the ministry in implementing the Diabetes Control and Prevention Project. Resident Representative of WHO Mr Stephan Jost also gave a speech. The minister and party viewed the books, papers, pamphlets and posters on the disease published by the Diabetes Control and Prevention Project and anti-diabetes medicines and equipment.
Yangon, 14 Nov - The coordination meeting for opening Aungmingala Coach Station and vegetable brokerage was held at the meeting hall of Yangon Command this morning, with an opening address by Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Chairman Yangon Command Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe.First, Commander Maj-Gen Myint Swe made an opening speech. He explained matters relating to opening the coach station jointly run by the YCDC and Yangon Division Peace and Development Council for the convenience of commuters and travelers in Yangon city and other places and not to cause traffic congestion in the city because of highway buses, and arrangements for buses, taxis and slow-moving vehicles and recreation centers and guest houses for passengers.
Next, Joint-Secretary U Kyi Win made reports on plans for systematic installation of seats in the bus terminal and using of intercom for departure time of buses.
Then, YCDC member Col Thaung Wai made a report on construction of buildings and bus stops; Managing Director Col Sein Tin Win on building a filling station and Deputy Superintending Engineer U Nyan Win of Myanma Posts and Telecommunications on installation of auto-phone exchange in the coach station and the brokerage. Those present took part in the discussions and the meeting came to a close with concluding remarks by the commander.
Ministry of Industry-2 opens training course, workshop
Yangon, 14 Nov - The opening ceremony of the TOT for Workplace HIV/AIDS Peer Education Training Course, and the Workshop on Industrial Accident Prevention, jointly organized by the Ministry of Health, Health Department, Myanmar Medical Association (Central) and WHO and UNICEF, was held at the hall-A of MMA on Theinbyu Street this morning.
Present were Chief Medical Officer Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe of the Ministry of Industry-2, Director-General Dr Wan Maung of Health Department, Director-General U Khin Maung of Directorate of Industrial Planning, Chairman of MMA (Central) Prof Dr Myo Myint, officials, instructors and trainees. Chairman of MMA (Central) Prof Dr Myo Myint gave an opening speech.
Next, Chief Medical Officer Dr Daw Khin Win Shwe extended greetings. After the opening ceremony, Project Manager Professor Dr Kyaw Myint Naing of Accident Prevention Project of the Health Department and Dr Mya Thaung discussed their respective topics at the Workshop on Industrial Accident Prevention. Then, the trainees participated in the group discussions of the workshop. Next, officials held supplementary discussions.
The workshop will continue tomorrow. Altogether 75 trainees from enterprises and factories of the Ministry of Industry-2 are attending the TOT for Workplace HIV/AIDS Peer Education Training Course which will last five days.
Talks on "Sports Medicine" to be held
Yangon, 14 Nov - Society of Medical Rehabilitation, Myanmar Medical Association is planning to give a lecture on "Sports Medicine" by two professors from abroad on 17 November 2002 from 6 pm to 7 pm at Myanmar Medical Association, Auditorium A.
Prof Norbert Bachc MD (Austria), President of European Federation of Sports Medicine (EFSM) will give talks on "Muscular Adaptation in Space and it's relevance in elite sports training and rehabilitation" and Prof Andre J L C Debruyne M D (Belgium) President of Flemish Society of Sports Medicine on "Wrist and Hand Injuries" respectively. Medical specialists, medical officers from various sports federations and interested doctors are invited to attend.

Eastern Command offers Kathina robes
Yangon, 14 Nov - 41st Communal Kathina robes offering ceremony and prize presentation ceremony of Dhamma Sakka Sutta recitation competition of Eastern Command was held at the command in Taunggyi on 10 November.
It was attended by members of the Sangha, Chairman of Shan State Peace and Development Council Commander of Eastern Command Brig-Gen Khin Maung Myint. At the ceremony, the congregation received the Five Precepts from Theintaung Sayadaw Agga Maha Pandita Agga Maha Saddhamma Jotika Bhaddanta Candadhika. The commander and wife, and officials presented kathina robes and offertories to the members of the Sangha and presented prizes to the winners.

Defence Services C-in-C's Shield Wushu Contest opens
Yangon, 14 Nov - The opening ceremony of Ninth Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services' Shield Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air) Wushu Contest was held at Bahtoo Stadium (Mandalay) this morning, attended by Commander of Central Command Brig-Gen Ye Myint.
First, the competitors took the designated places and the commander delivered an address and declared the competition open. The new generation athletes of Myanmar Wushu Federation performed their Wushu skills. Altogether 21 teams of Regiments and Units are participating in the competition to be held up to 18 November.
