Modern and developed nation will truly emerge as much as people are hardworking, skilled and patriotic
Senior General Than Shwe attends inauguration ceremony of Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway)Yangon, 24 Nov - A ceremony to inaugurate Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway), built by Public Works of the Ministry of Construction, to link Magway and Minbu with a view to ensuring better transport between eastern and western bank regions of Ayeyawady River in Magway Division and Rakhine State, was held at the pandal of the Ayeyawady River (Magway) Construction Project this morning, with an address by Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe.
Deputy Director U Hla Win of Myanma Radio and Television acted as master of ceremonies.
Members of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann of the Ministry of Defence delivered an opening address.
In his address, Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann said that the construction of Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) which contributes much towards the emergence of a modern and developed nation and development of Magway Division was completed and the opening ceremony was held, adding Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Head of State Senior General Than Shwe himself graced the ceremony by attending it. The attendance of Senior General Than Shwe reflects his seriousness attention to the new bridge.
Myanmar with sizeable brilliant people is rich in natural resources and is a geographically strategic country. Therefore, it can become a top nation.
Although the country was in a position to make progress there occurred armed insurgency and sectarianism between political groups after regaining her independence, making the country lag behind in development.
During 1988, the country was on the verge of disintegration and the Tatmadaw had to assume the State's duties in response to the demand of the history. In the time of the Tatmadaw Government efforts are being made to ensure the stability of the State, national solidarity and development of the State up to now.
Reforms are being made in a hurry for equitable development in political, economic, defence, social and administrative sectors in building the Union into a peaceful, modern and developed nation. Nowadays, relentless and sustained efforts will have to be made with greater momentum for national development.
Dams, reservoirs, river water pumping projects and sluice gates are being constructed one after another in places where there have favorable condition for development of agricultural sector on which the national economy rely. In addition, encouragement is being given to development of private industrial sector and the industrial sector of the State. In short, the economic infrastructures, the prerequisite for development of agricultural, industrial, fisheries, forestry, mining and energy sectors are being built. At the same time, the universities, colleges, basic education schools and hospitals, the social infrastructures were built to produce the outstanding citizens and to make the people healthy and live longer in education, health and science and technology sectors.
Other arrangements have been made and project are being implemented with a view to ensuring equitable development the length and breath of the nation, development of border areas which lagged behind in development in successive eras and development of rural areas where the majority of people reside.
To take measures for development which will contribute much towards the interests of the State and the people, the Government at the same time has to make efforts to ensure stability of the State and prevalence of law and order.
The Government had to make efforts to secure the return of armed groups out of much difficulty.
At a time when all kinds of construction projects are being implemented for national development and in the interests of the State and the people, bridges and roads, airports and ports such as Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) are being constructed.
Transport is important for the development of the entire Union, strengthening of national solidarity, linking with all regions and narrowing the development gap between one region and another. It is impossible to undertake national and regional development tasks without better transport. With this concept, major bridges across the Ayeyawady River are being built.
Before Ayeyawady bridge, there have been Nawade bridge (Pyay), Maubin bridge, Bala Minhtin bridge (Myitkyina), Bo Myat Tun bridge (Nyaungdon), and Anawrahta bridge (Chauk). Six Ayeyawady River Bridges including the present one have been built in five years since 1997.
There were Ayeyawady river crossing Anawrahta bridge and Chindwin river crossing Hsinbyushin bridge already built in Magway Division in the past. There are now three major bridges in the division including Ayeyawady bridge. In addition, Myittha river crossing Saidu bridge, Manchaung bridge, Yawchaung bridge, Nwetamai bridge and Mohnchaung bridge have been constructed in Magway Division (West).
Altogether 155 major bridges with a length of over 180 feet 147 were constructed by Public Works of the Ministry of Construction, 5 by Myanma Railways of the Ministry of Rail Transportation, and 3 by Directorate of Military Engineers of the Ministry of Defence.
Those bridges were built with own strength and resources. So also it is obvious that the capability and strength of Myanmar engineers meet with those of the international level. In other word, it is obvious that Myanmars have own ability, qualification and capability that can build and defend the nation, and the completion of Ayeyawady river crossing bridges including Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) is a victory which brings the glory to the nation.
The government, the people and the Tatmadaw are making efforts for emergence of a peaceful, modern developed nation based on patriotism. At a time when the government is building the nation, all should be aware of destructive elements who are in contact with external forces relying on some foreign nations that want dominate the country.
The Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) is a major bridge linking east and west regions of the Ayeyawady River. One can go easily to Rakhine State through Minbu-An-Sittway Road; Bago, Ayeaywady and Sagaing Divisions through Pathein-Monywa Road; and Chin State through Haka-Gangaw Road and Kyaukhtu-Saw Road. After opening Magway and Anawrahta Bridges, Magway Division is the gateway to Rakhine and Chin States. Accepting the guidance on transport given by the Head of State, the government is building roads and bridges in the regions. Now the major bridges, the Ayeyawady Bridge (Dedaye), the Ayeyawady Bridge (Yadanabon) and the Thanlwin Bridge (Mawlamyine) and new roads and railroads are under construction. Construction of new Magway and Pakokku Airports started.
With the improvement of transport, relationship among the national races will become closer and trade and flow of commodities will also improve. The deep sea port in Kyaukphyu in Rakhine State will surely link the bridges and local and foreign trade will develop.
It is obvious that progress has been made because the government and the people actively participated in nation-building tasks after the Tatmadaw had taken up State duties.
The Union will surely develop if there are correct and reasonable national policies, the government discharges duties day and night, the Tatmadawmen discharge national defence duties and participate in community welfare and the people work hard.
Solidarity of the national people, their diligence, innovation, discipline and enthusiasm are decisive factors for the Union of Myanmar to perpetuate as long as the world exists.
If one relies on external elements, the future of the State will fall into the hands of big nations and the nation will become a minion. He urged the people to work harder with patriotism and to safeguard national interest.
In conclusion, he said the bridge was built on self-reliance basis in spite of financial constraints. He also urged the people to serve regional and national interest and maintain the bridge for its durability.
Then, Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun made a speech. He said the Government is building all-season major bridges, motor roads and railroads for smooth transportation. At present, Union Highways linking all parts of the country are emerging and major bridges are being built all over the country. Public Works has already built altogether 147 bridges including this bridge each of which is over 180 feet long and 40 more bridges are under construction.
In accord with the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than Shwe, construction tasks for the Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) were being implemented with momentum both on Magway Bank and Minbu Bank simultaneously. So, construction of the bridge was completed within a period of 2 years and 10 months.
Of all the completed 147 bridges, the Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) is the longest and it was constructed and opened in a period of 2 years and 10 months. A total of 9,683 tons of iron rods, 42,439 tons of cement, 1,424,165 gallons of diesel, 29,360 kyin of gravel were used in building the bridge.
The State has spent K 7,951 million and US $ 8.58 million in building the bridge. By using the bridge, people from the eastern and western parts of River Ayeyawady can travel to Ayeyawady Division, Rakhine State and southern part of Chin State via the central plains. Using the bridge, rice from Ayeyawady Division and marine products from Rakhine State can be transported to all parts of the country.
Then, Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Chairman Central Command Commander Brig-Gen Ye Myint made a speech. He said although Magway Division and the delta region have economic good foundations, development was delayed due to poor transport. Regions in the west of the division lagged behind in social and economic development due to poor transport.
River Ayeyawady flows through the division, it poses as a natural barrier. So, national people had to rely only on waterway in the past. Using Z-crafts, boats and ships to cross the river for economic and social purposes, local people had encountered dangerous situations and spend more time and energy. As the bridge was completed, these barriers can now be overcome and national people can cross the bridge with peace of mind. So, for the State, it is worthy of spending a huge amount of money in building the bridge. The economy of the people living in the division and delta region will develop due to the bridge, he said.
In conclusion, he, on behalf of the local people, spoke words of thanks to Head of State, authorities, the Ministry of Construction and other ministries who rendered assistance in building the bridge, members of Magway Division Peace and Development Council, departmental heads and others.
Afterwards, Magway Division USDA Secretary U Khin Maung Swe spoke words of thanks on behalf of the local people. He said better transport is a major requirement for development of a country. Roads and bridges are the strength of the nation. That is why the State is building roads and bridges nationwide with greater momentum. Inauguration of Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) in Magway Division showed the goodwill of the Head of State and the government. He thanked the government for construction of the bridge that brings about regional development and raising living standard of the people and strengthening of friendship among the national people.
He also expressed thanks to the Ministry of Construction that built the bridge within a short time with the strength of Myanmar engineers without any foreign assistance.
He assured that local people and members of USDA would maintain the bridge for its durability and protect it from natural disasters.
Senior General Than Shwe then gave guidance. He said: I wish health and prosperity for all the persons attending the ceremony. The Magway Bridge is a valuable facility, really required for the region. As I have discharged duties at different levels and positions in the region, I have already known the daily struggles of the local people to earn their living. Although they are close to each other, the west bank did not achieve development as fast as the east bank. Since then, I have in mind that "it will be good if there is a bridge across the river in this region."
Since the government has taken charge of the State duties, I have made a firm determination to build a bridge in the area. After successfully building a number of bridges on the Ayeyawady including Nawade, Bo Myat Tun and Anawrahta, we have acquired the experience and knowledge required in building a large bridge like the Magway Bridge.
The transport infrastructures including roads and bridges are specially needed in building a peaceful, modern and developed nation. We are building the necessary roads and bridges in all parts of the nation as the infrastructure is also required in other regions.
We still need to build a lot more of roads, bridges, airports, dams, industries, institutions of higher learning and hospitals in the entire Union. In other words, as the volume of the national modernization and development drive is large, we can say that it is an endless task.
Launching of the national development drive is not only for the present national interests, but also for enabling the posterity to enjoy the benefits and to stand tall.
Because of her land and water conditions and rich natural resources, we can say that our nation already has foundations for progress. But due to various reasons, the nation could not effectively utilize her natural resources during the post-independence era. Thus, in the past, the nation did not achieve progress as much as it should. It is needed to combine the goodwill, dedication and patriotism in tapping the natural resources with the handwork of every person.
A modern and developed nation will truly emerge as much as the people are hardworking, skilled and patriotic.
Then, the ceremony to open Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) was held at the archway of the approach bridge on Mingala Road in Magway. Lt-Gen Thura Shwe Mann and Lt-Gen Ye Myint of the Ministry of Defence, Commander Brig-Gen Ye Myint and Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun formally opened the bridge at 9.09 am.
Next, Senior General Than Shwe and party had documentary photo taken together with the local people on the approach road on Magway bank. Afterwards, the Senior General unveiled the stone plaque of the bridge on Mingala Road in Magway. Meanwhile, drums were beaten by the Mingala drum troupe.
Then, the Senior General and party and guests passed through the bridge. They were welcomed from the archway on Magway bank to the archway on Minbu bank by students of dance troupes and bands of Magway Basic Education High School No 2, Magway BEMS No 1, the bands of Taungdwingyi and Yenangyoung. The Senior General cordially met with departmental personnel, USDA members, social organizations and local people.
In addition, dance troupes to the accompaniment of the bands on board four Z-crafts in Ayeyawady River presented entertainment to the audience.
Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) linking Magway and Minbu has 2,020 feet long approach bridge and 6,969 feet long main bridge, totaling 8,989 feet long. The bridge has a 28-foot-wide motorway and six-foot-wide pedestrian lanes on the either side. It links Mingala Road on Magway bank and Kywethoehmyaung Village on Minbu bank.
The lower structure of the bridge is of reinforced concrete, the upper one is of steel frames and the approach bridges is of pre-stressed reinforced concrete. The bridge can withstand 60-ton loads and water clearance is 360 feet wide and 57 feet high.
The construction of the bridge started on 20 January 2000 and completed in November 2002.
Multicoloured flags were being hoisted on either side of the bridge, on the approach bridges and on each pedestrian lane as well as the State Flags on the signboard of the bridge to mark the opening of the bridge. In the evening, the approach bridges and the main bridge were illuminated.
