Union Senior General Than Shwe meets officials in Magway DivisionYangon, 25 Nov - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe arrived in Pwintbyu Township after attending the inauguration of Ayeyawady Bridge (Magway) on 24 November.
Minister U Aung Thaung reported on objectives of Pyintbyu Textile Mill (Project) being implemented by Myanma Textile Industries at Kanthagyi Village, two miles from Pwintbyu, production techniques, types of textile to be produced, power of the machines to be installed, raw material requirements, supply of power, water and natural gas, arrival of machines and progress of work. Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Central Command Brig-Gen Ye Myint and Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Zaw Min reported on cultivation of cotton in Mandalay and Magway Divisions.
Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin reported on cultivation acreage of cotton, cultivation of long staple cotton and purchase of cotton. In his guidance, Senior General Than Shwe said the government is building factories and workshops needed in the country for import substitute and efforts are to be made for realization of the objectives. He spoke of the need to complete the Pwintbyu Textile Project on schedule. Proper arrangements are to be made for supply of sufficient cotton for the mill. Requirements are to be fulfilled for the convenience of cotton growers in the cotton special zone.
Senior General Than Shwe and party inspected the scale model of Pwintbyu Textile Mill (Project), construction of the main building of the mill and other buildings. Senior General Than Shwe and party returned to Magway by car and met members of Magway Division Peace and Development Council, departmental officials, Chairmen of Magway, Minbu, Thayet and Gangaw District Peace and Development Councils and members, Chairmen of Township Peace and Development Councils in Magway, Minbu, Thayet and Gangaw Districts, officials of university, college and basic education high schools in Magway, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association, Red Cross and Auxiliary Fire Brigades, Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Women's Affairs Committee, and War Veterans Organization, trainees of nursing course and local people at the city hall. Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Zaw Min reported on population of the division, land and water resources and utilization of resources, construction of the dams, embankments in the division, cultivation of various crops, arrangements for rice sufficiency in the region and measures undertaken for rural development.
Senior General Than Shwe then gave guidance. He said he came to Magway Division to formally open the important Magway Bridge and to inspect development of the division. The regions in the division has developed to some extent. The State has laid down plans for development of the entire Union including Magway Division and raising the living standard of the people and is implementing them in all sectors, he said. He said there was no progress in border regions in the country for various reasons. The border region development project is being implemented for progress of economic, education, health, social and transport conditions of the national people who lagged in behind development for years, he added.
Similarly, arrangements are being made for development of the inner regions of the country, he said. For narrowing the development gap between one region and another as far as possible 24 development regions were designated and emphasis was placed on progress of region-wise education, health, transport and economic conditions, he said. The objective of these tasks is to develop all parts of the Union, he said.
He said at the same time rural development tasks are being implemented with greater momentum for development of rural areas where the majority of the people live and narrowing of the gap between urban and rural areas. He said it is important to successfully implement the economic plans in order to effectively carry out these development tasks. As the economic plans laid down are successful, the wealth of the nation will be strong, he said. He said region in-charges are to implement the region-wise plans in states and divisions successfully.
The region in-charges at different levels are to make efforts for emergence of a peaceful, modern developed nation with better leadership and thoughts and dynamism. The government, on its part, will discharge its duties conscientiously. Then, the Senior General cordially greeted those present.

Encouragement needs to be given to livestock breeding which can be undertaken together with agriculture for economic development of rural people
Yangon, 25 Nov - Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Senior General Than Shwe, left Bagan-NyaungU by car and arrived at Ayeyawady bridge (Anawrahta) in Chauk, Magway Division, at 10 am on 23 November.
Then, Senior General Than Shwe and party met with the Chairmen of Magway District and Chauk Township Peace and Development Councils and members, departmental officials and others at the hall near the bridge. Chairman of Magway District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Zaw Thein and Chairman of Chauk Township Peace and Development Council U Win Myint reported on the population of Chauk Township, land resources and land utilization, rainfall, measures being taken for agricultural purpose, cultivation of crops, self-sufficiency in rice, growing of trees to ensure regional greening and implementation of the five rural development tasks.
Then, Chairman of Magway Division Peace and Development Council Col Zaw Min reported on construction of small dams for regional greening, and Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin gave a supplementary report on water resources in Chauk Township. Afterwards, Senior General Than Shwe made a speech. He said that development of agricultural sector and availability of water play a major role in development of Chauk Township, adding that only when the tasks for availability of water can effectively be carried out will the living standard of rural people improve. That is why the Government has been making strenuous efforts to tap the water resources for agricultural purpose and drinking. It is also incumbent upon the local authorities to tap water resources to a possible degree, and the Government, on its part, will provide necessary assistance to the project. Encouragement needs to be given to livestock breeding which can be undertaken together with agriculture for economic development of rural people. Meanwhile, means and ways are to be sought to increase the par capita and economic development in the township and district.
Development of a region is to be assessed with economic, administrative and social norms and the remedial measures are to be taken. He called on officials to make earnest efforts for regional development by paying serious attention to the five rural development tasks. Then, the Senior General and party inspected Ayeyawady Bridge (Anawrahta) opened in April 2001. Next, the Senior General and party left Chauk by car and arrived in Yenangyoung at noon. The Senior General and party met departmental officials of Yenangyoung Township at the hall of the local battalion in Yenangyoung.
Chairman of Magway District Peace and Development Council Lt-Col Zaw Thein and Chairman of Yenangyoung Township Peace and Development Council U Chit Thein reported on population of the township, land resources, utilization of land areas, cultivation of crops and conditions of the dam, the lake and the embankment in the township.
Commander Brig-Gen Ye Myint and Magway Division Chairman Col Zaw Min reported on greening tasks of the township and progress in undertaking water availability for cultivation for regional development.

Then, the Senior General and party arrived in Magway in the afternoon. They inspected digging of the main canal and tributary canals of Thaphanseik river water pumping project being implemented by Water Resource Utilization Department in Thaphanseik region of Magway Township.
At the briefing hall, Minister Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin reported on location and facts about the project and benefited areas.
Director-General U Win Shwe of WRUD reported on implementation of the project, progress of works and requirements.
Deputy Minister for Transport U Pe Than reported on proper flow of water in Ayeyawady River.
Minister U Aung Thaung, Minister Maj-Gen Tin Htut and Minister Brig-Gen Lun Thi also reported on distribution of cement and fuel to the project and arrangements for power supply.

The Senior General gave guidance on extension of paddy cultivation as much as possible after implementing the project and use of quality strain in growing staple cotton.
Then, the Senior General and party inspected the pump station of the project and project work for pumping water at respective steps. Thaphanseik river water pumping project is being implemented seven phases. Not only the phases of the project but also completion of the whole project will benefit 8,000 acres of farmlands. Digging of the main canal has been completed 98 per cent so far and the tributary canals 73 per cent.
The Senior General and party inspected the tasks of the project and proceeded to the construction site of new Magway Airport. At the briefing hall, Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe reported on progress in implementing the new airport, construction of the 12,000 feet long and 200 feet wide runway, building the apron, kinds of planes which can land the new airport and matters related to construction of new Magway Airport building.
Next, Managing Director U Tun Myint Naing of Asia World Co reported on construction of the runway of the airport. After hearing the reports, the Senior General gave a guidance. He said that the Government will have to strive together with the entrepreneurs in construction of airports, wharves and motor roads on self-reliant basis. Training have been conducted for the national entrepreneurs to become businessmen capable of using modern business technology and to be able to strengthen their economy.
It is required for the Government and the private entrepreneurs to strive together in harmony in building the future State. In undertaking the national development tasks, the private entrepreneurs are to establish not only transport infrastructure but also economic infrastructures such as factories and workshops. Meanwhile, the experienced Myanmar entrepreneurs will have to make strenuous efforts to become the entrepreneurs of the international level. In building the new Magway Airport, the Myanmar engineers and Myanmar companies are to make sustained efforts to show their capability of constructing the airport of international level meeting the set standard.
Then, the Senior General inspected the scale model of the airport. Next, the Senior General and party inspected the construction of the runway and the apron and laying of concrete layer on the runway.

Secretary-1 attends ceremony to seek advice on Maha Santisukha Kyaungdawgyi from Ovadacariya Sayadaws
Yangon, 25 Nov - Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt supplicated on religious affairs at the ceremony to seek advice on management and administrative matters of Maha Santisukha Buddhist Missionary Centre from Ovadacariya Sayadaws held at the centre in Natchaung Ward, Tamway Township, at noon today.
The congregation took the Five Precepts from the Magway Sayadaw. Then, members of the Sangha recited Parittas. Then, the Secretary-1 supplicated on religious affairs. He said the ministries, organizations and wellwishers from home and abroad donated cash for the Kyaungdaw. It was built at a cost of over K 900 million.
The opening ceremony of the ten-storey Kyaungdaw was held on 17 December 1999 before completion of the building. Twenty trainees were admitted to the one-year course and it was successfully completed. Now the Kyaungdaw has been completed. The Committee of Ovadacariya Sayadaws and Board of Trustees are to be formed and their duty is to manage the Kyaungdaw. The State Pariyatti Sasana Universities in Yangon and Mandalay and International Theravada Buddhist Missionary University are under the management of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee.
He also said Maha Santisukha Buddhist Missionary Kyaungdaw should be under the management of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee. Then, General Khin Nyunt sought advice from the Sayadaws. On behalf of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, Magway Sayadaw Bhaddanta Kumara delivered an Ovadakatha.
Afterwards, the Secretary-1 supplicated that tasks will be coordinated with the Ministry of Religious Affairs and other organizations to systematically carry out management and administrative matters in accord with the Ovadakatha of the Magway Sayadaw.
After the ceremony, the Secretary-1 met with officials and gave instructions on systematic carrying out of management and administrative matters in accord with the Sayadaws's advice.

Culture Minister inspects renovation of ancient pagodas in Bagan
Yangon, 25 Nov - Minister for Culture Maj-Gen Kyi Aung arrived in Bagan-NyaungU yesterday and inspected renovation of Hsutaungpyay Pagoda in the compound of Hsutaungpyay Kyaungtaik.
The minister inspected religious buildings in the compound of Hsutaungpyay Kyaungtaik and gave necessary instructions. At Lawkananda Pagoda, the minister viewed arrangements to hoist Htidaw atop Lawkananda Tooth Relic Pagoda. He inspected renovation of pagoda Nos 1515 and 2205 in the Bagan cultural region and progress in renovation of religious buildings in the compound of Shwenanyintaw Kyauktaik.
The minister also saw over renovation of pagoda Nos 2017 and 2019, Mingala Pagoda, Soemingyi Pagoda and Laymyathna Pagoda. This morning, the minister inspected the Bagan Archaeological Museum and the garden eastern part of the museum.

Yangon, 25 Nov - The Work Committee for Organizing Thuwunabunmi Journey being jointly undertaken by Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos was held at Kandawgyi Palace Hotel on Kanyeiktha Street this morning.
At the meeting, those present discussed sales of joint-tour schedules, production and distribution of tour schedule, advertisements of joint-tour schedules with asking for assistance through external embassies of member countries, external offices, air lines and tourism entrepreneurs of Thai Tourism Authority and measures to be taken for the development of religion and cultural tour region of member countries.
Japanese Tour Guide Course to be opened
Yangon, 26 Nov - For ensuring development of tourism industry in Myanmar, the training school of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, the Myanmar Travel Association with the cooperation of the instructors from the International Rainbow Tokyo Language Academy are making arrangements to open the Japanese Tour Guide Course for three weeks starting from 23 December.
The course will admit 100 trainees in the first batch. Those wishing to attend the course must have tour guide licence from the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism. Deputy Minister/Foreign Secretary Level Meeting held
Yangon, 25 Nov - The Deputy Minister/Foreign Secretary Level Meeting of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Union of Myanmar and the Ministry of External Affairs of the Republic of India was held at Saturingabala Hall, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at 10 am today.
U Khin Maung Win, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs led the Myanmar delegation while the Indian delegation was headed by Mr Kanwal Sibal, Foreign Secretary of India. The Myanmar delegation comprised Deputy Minister for Culture U Soe Nyunt and representatives from the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministries concerned engaged in Myanmar-India bilateral cooperation.
The Indian side included Mr Rajiv Kumar Bhatia, Ambassador of India to Myanmar, Mrs Neelam Deo, Joint-Secretary of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs and the Embassy of India in Yangon. Wide range of matters relating to bilateral relations and cooperation were discussed at the meeting.
Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs U Khin Maung Win hosted a dinner in honour of the visiting Indian Foreign Secretary at Kandawgyi Karaweik Palace in the evening.

Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than inspects construction of dams, road sections of Yangon-Mandalay Union Highway in Bago Division
Yangon, 25 Nov - Member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than of the Ministry of Defence and party, inspected repair of the underwater pipe crossing Kali Creek on the main canal of Zaungtu Dam in Bago Township on 23 November morning.
Director U Kyaw Tun of Bago Division Irrigation Maintenance Unit and officials reported on repair tasks of the underwater pipe crossing Kali Creek. After hearing reports, Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than gave necessary instructions.
Then, Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than and party arrived at the construction site of upgrading 48 miles long Bago-Nyaunglebin road section from mile posts 50/0 to 98/0 on Yangon-Mandalay Union Highway being undertaken by Shwe Thanlwin Highway Co. Officials reported on upgrading of the road section, preliminary engineering works, progress of road construction tasks, collection and production of gravel, collection of tar, use of machines and heavy machinery in the work site and arrangements for carrying out the tasks in the open season. Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than gave instructions.
He said that plans are being implemented for upgrading Yangon-Mandalay Union Highway to the six-lane one. The two-lane road being repaired now must be repaved in the open season. At the same time, preparations are to be made for construction of the three-lane earth road. And efforts are to be made for timely completion of the construction tasks. Then, they proceeded to Pyinbon Dam in Pyinbon Village, DaikU Township. Director U Kyaw Tun of Bago Division Irrigation Maintenance Unit reported on construction of Pyinbon Dam, irrigated areas, cultivable lands outside the irrigated areas and this year's target of the agricultural sector.
Commander Brig-Gen Aung Min and Deputy General Manager U Hla Myo of Myanma Agriculture Service gave supplementary reports. After hearing reports, Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than said that the Government has spent a large sum of money on building Pyinbon dam. Although the dam can benefit 3,939 acres of farmlands, there are 1,637 acres of land under cultivation. So, 2,299 acres of land are vacant. As the kind of soil in the benefited areas is sandy soil, MAS is to establish the model agricultural farm in the irrigated area and to organize the local farmers to undertake agricultural tasks in the region. Next, they inspected Pyinbongyi Dam.
Afterwards, they went to Kyaikzagaw Livestock Breeding Farm in DaikU Township and inspected breeding of pigs and broilers at the farm. At Aungzeya Broilers Farm in Pyinbongyi Station in Bago Township, Farm in-charge Lt-Col Kyaw Htaik and officials reported on breeding of the broilers. Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than and party inspected the poultry farm. In Pyinbongyi Station, 293,104 broilers are being bred. A total of 278,382 chickens have been sold to the markets in Yangon so far. In 2002-2003, 3,000 pigs, 100,000 broilers and 25,000 layers have been bred.
Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than and party inspected construction of Nyaungkhashay-Myitkyo-DaikU rural development bypass. Officials reported on progress of works, repair of the road in rainy season, tasks on paving of laterite, building of bridges and upgrading of the road, arrangements for cultivation of monsoon and summer paddy, pulses and beans after reclaiming wetlands in Bago, Waw, Thanatpin, Kawa, Nyaunglebin, DaikU and Kyaukdaga townships.
Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than gave necessary instructions. Then, Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than inspected construction of Yenwe Bridge on Yangon-Mandalay Highway in Nyaunglebin Township and gave necessary instructions. Afterwards, Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than inspected repaving tasks at mile post 122/6 on Nyaunglebin-Zeyawady road section being undertaken by Hi-Star Public Co Ltd which is a subsidiary of Olympic Co Ltd. At the office of Hi-Star Public Co Ltd, Project Director U Khaing Oo reported on road construction tasks between mileposts 98/0 in Nyaunglebin and mileposts 146/0 in Zeyawady on Yangon-Mandalay Highways Project being undertaken by Hi-Star Public Co Ltd.
They then inspected Pyaungthay Bridge in Phyu Township. On arrival at the office of Kanbawza Pathfinder Industries Ltd which is building Zeyawady-Yedashay road section between mile posts 146 and 194 on Yangon-Mandalay Union Highways, Project Director U Ba Tun reported on upgrading of the road, repaid of bridges, collection of gravel, tar, cement and fuel and use of heavy machinery.
Lt-Gen Khin Maung Than gave necessary instructions. In the afternoon, they left Toungoo.
Meeting on World AIDS Day Exhibition held
Yangon, 25 Nov - The meeting on holding the ceremony and exhibition marking Word AIDS Day was held at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Health on Pyidaungsu Yeiktha Street here this morning and Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein presided over the meeting.
At the meeting, the minister urged the responsible departments to display the preventive measures against HIV/AIDS which are being carried out with added momentum in Myanmar at the exhibition and to make efforts to inform the people of the developments through the media.
Work coordinated for holding Fourth Special Working Group Meeting on SKRL
Yangon, 25 Nov - The second coordination meeting of the sub-committees for holding the Fourth Special Working Group Meeting on the Singapore-Kunming Rail Link (SKRL) was held at the Ministry of Rail Transportation at the corner of Theinbyu Road and Merchant Road here to help successful holding of the fourth meeting to be held in Myanmar.
Patron of the committee for holding of the fourth meeting Deputy Minister for Rail Transportation U Pe Than made a speech. He said the third meeting was successfully held this year and the fourth meeting will be held on 11 and 12 December at Sedona Hotel, here. He called for cordial discussions for the successful holding of the fourth meeting.
Then, Director-General U Kyaw Hsan of the Transport Planning Department reported to the meeting on arrangements for the fourth meeting. A general round of discussions followed and the meeting came to a close.
L & F Minister inspects fisheries in Ayeyawady
Yangon, 25 Nov - Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein, yesterday morning inspected the construction of fish ponds at the hatcheries of Pholamin Farming Co and the Fisheries Department, Pantanaw Township, at Pathwe Village in Pantanaw Township, Ayeyawady Division and gave instruction on preparations for exceeding the target.
Later, the minister met with the staff under the ministry at the Fisheries Department, Pathein. In the afternoon, the minister inspected the 750-ton cold storage factory and 200-ton feedstuff factory of Yuzana Group at Yankintaung 1-Ward in Pathein. He also saw over the floating cages 1 and 2 which are being used for farming river catfish Silonia (childreni ).
Then, the minister went to the hatchery of Yuzana Group at Gwecho Village, Mayanchaung Village-tract in Pathein and inspected the ponds.
National races group makes study tour
Yangon, 24 Nov - At the invitation of the chairman of the Work Committee for Development of Border Areas and National Races, 65 National Races from Manhiro Region in Shan State (North), 50 Kayan and Padaung national races from Pekhon Township in Kayah Region, and 55 national races from Kengtaung/Kengkham regions, totalling 170, together with officials of the Progress of Border Areas and National Races Department, visited Lawka Chantha Abhaya Laba Muni Pagoda where they donated cash and Hlinethaya Industrial Zone this morning.
Deputy Director-General of PBANRD Lt- Col Myint Swe and officials met with the national races. The study group also visited the office of the Union Solidarity and Development Association (Headquarters). Sixty-five national races from Manhiro Region, Shan State (North), left here for home this evening.
