Saving patients' life by means of blood is noble deeds for blood donors Health Minister attends Blood Donors Day

Yangon, 14 Dec - The 26th Blood Donors Day was held in conjunction with the ceremony to honour the blood donors at the meeting hall of Institute of Nursing (Yangon) on Bogyoke Aung San Street here this morning with an address by Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein and Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel.

In his address, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein said that the Ministry of Health has been making efforts for better medical treatment, uplift of the health standard, diagnosis and rehabilitation. In doing so, it has been providing the qualified staff, equipment and health facilities to modernize treatment, blood transfusion and blood banks, he stressed.

Now, blood transfusion has been conducted after categorizing the kind of blood with the use of modern medical equipment. In the process, no matter how the modern techniques have developed, the blood cannot be made. Thus, blood can be assumed as life since it is a crucial part of the body, he said. Blood is an important element for a patient who needs blood transfusion and donation of blood amounts to donation of life. And donation of blood is the most difficult task.

In the blood transfusion history in Myanmar, he said, the blood bank was opened in Yangon General Hospital in 1939. At that time, the system of buying blood had been practiced. But in 1962, the system was changed into the wellwishers' blood donating system, which is in conformity with the Myanmar people, who are generous. Then, the National Blood Bank emerges and the blood bank undertakings were boosted.

The ministry has laid down the national health plan (2001-2006) and is implementing it with the aim of lifting up the national health standard. Accordingly, systematic efforts are being made for acquisition of purified blood and ensuring systematic blood transfusion. Nowadays, there occur diseases such as HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, syphilis and malaria that are infectious through blood.

According to charts and records, blood from donors is safer than that from those who sold their blood. This being so, blood donors are urged to maintain and keep their blood purified and donate it quarterly. In addition, the blood donors are also urged to organize their friends and relatives to become blood donors.

He said that it was a great pleasure to see those who made cash and kind donations, those rendered necessary assistance to ensure smooth blood bank undertakings for organizing the ceremony to honour blood donors at one place.

With an increase in the number of blood donors year by year, there are 459 blood donors who had donated blood over 50 times and 15 blood donors who had donated blood 100 times. At the same time, owing to loving-kindness of the wellwishers, more and more gifts can be presented to the blood donors.

This year, the Government presented medals for outstanding performance in social field (first grade) to 23 blood donors, medals for outstanding performance in social field (second grade) to 35 blood donors and medals for outstanding performance in social field (third grade) to 62 blood donors.

It is due to efforts of USDA members, members of Myanmar Maternal and Child Welfare Association, Myanmar Red Cross Society, Myitta Byuha Association, Mingalar Byuha Association, Myanmar Fire Training School and other religious and social organizations.

In conclusion, he said that the Ministry of Health thanked the blood donors and those who provided necessary assistance for organizing the ceremony to honour the blood donors and called on the blood donors to try their best to maintain their blood clean and purified. He wished the blood donors could donate their blood up to over 100 times and the wellwishers could make more and more donations.

The State has drafted the law on blood and blood element and measures are being taken for systematic use of the blood. Saving the patients' life by means of blood is noble deeds, he noted.

Then, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein accepted donations in honour of the blood donors day. The donations included K 800,000 by Myanmar Red Cross Society, K 700,000 by Lion Myanmar Co, K 500,000 by Europe Continent Co, K 300,000 by Myitta Iotech Co, K 300,000 by Shine Hope Co and K 300,000 by Turumbo Co.

Next, Director-General Dr Hla Pe of Health Department accepted the donations which included K 210,000 by JV-7 Kanthaya Hospital, K 120,000 by medical wards of YGH, K 100,090 by Sandhi Traditional Medicines, K 100,000 by the Chairman of Yangon City Development Committee, K 100,000 by AMT Trading Co, K 30,000 by Jivitadana Sangha Hospital, K 15,000 by Yangon Eastern Hospital, K 10,000 by Maung Theik Kaung and K 10,000 by Yangon Children Hospital.

After accepting the donations, Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein and the director-general presented certificates of honour to the wellwishers. Afterwards, Minister Maj-Gen Ket Sein presented shields and a bicycle each to 12 blood donors who donated blood 100 times and above, and Minister Brig-Gen Abel medals to 12 blood donors who donated blood between 90 and 99 times.
