Vice-Senior General Maung Aye meets departmental officials, inspects Myainggalay Cement PlantYangon, 16 Dec - State Peace and Development Council Vice-Chairman Defence Services Deputy Commander-in-Chief Commander-in-Chief (Army) Vice-Senior General Maung Aye left Mawlamyine for Kya-in-Seikkyi in Kayin State on 14 December by helicopter.
Then, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye met Tatmadawmen from regiments and units and their families at the hall of local battalion in Kya-in-Seikkyi. After making a speech, he cordially greeted them. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party arrived at Zami hall and met departmental officials there. Township Peace and Development Council Chairman U Thet Naing Oo reported to Vice-Senior General Maung Aye on agriculture, education, health and economic conditions of the township. Kayin State Peace and Development Council Chairman Col Cho Tun Aung presented a supplementary report.
After hearing the reports, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye spoke of the need to make efforts for achieving sufficiency of rice in the region as well as other regions by setting targets, to grow perennial crops suitable to the weather of the region on commercial scale, to make efforts for ensuring prevalence of law and order in the region, to ensure enrolment of school-going age children, to render assistance to the students for pursuing higher education, to promote health care activities for the public and to strive for the township to be a developing township in Kayin State.
In the afternoon, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party arrived by helicopter at Nabu region in Kawkareik Township where Brig-Gen Khin Maung Soe of Kawkareik Station, Tactical Operations Commander Col Thaung Zin, officials and their families welcomed them.
At the hall there, Brig-Gen Khin Maung Soe reported to Vice-Senior General Maung Aye on development tasks for the Nabu region. After leaving necessary instructions there, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye proceeded to Nabu Basic Education High School where he inspected construction of new school building and heard reports by Schoolhead Daw Naw Ohn Myint and teachers. He also met Tatmadawmen in the region and gave necessary instructions.
Afterwards, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party arrived at Hpa-an where No 22 LID Officiating Tactical Operations Commander Lt-Col Kyaw Soe, Kayin State Peace and Development Council Secretary Lt-Col Kyaw Win Maung and officials welcomed them.
Yesterday morning, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye paid respects to Presiding Sayadaw of Mebaung Kyaungtaik in Hpa-an State Ovadacariya Abhidhaja Maha Rattha Guru Bhaddanta Indriya and presented offertories. Then, he inspected development of Hpa-an.
Next, the ministers, who accompanied Vice-Senior General Maung Aye, met members of Kayin State Peace and Development Council, state level departmental officials, Hpa-an District and Township Peace and Development Council chairmen and members, district/township level departmental officials, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and social organizations at the hall of No 22 LID.
On the occasion, Myanma Agriculture Service Kayin State Manager U Kyaw Thein briefed Vice-Senior General Maung Aye on agriculture tasks, the Irrigation Department Director U Tin San on land reclamation and digging of drainages in the region.
Minister for Agriculture and Irrigation Maj-Gen Nyunt Tin explained matters related to development of agriculture sector in Kayin State, Minister for National Planning and Economic Development U Soe Tha on development of economic sector of the State, contribution of Kayin State in the economic sector of the State and arrangements for development of Kayin State.
Vice-Senior General Maung Aye heard reports by Kayin State Peace and Development Council Chairman Col Cho Tun Aung on population of the Kayin State, rainfall, area of land in the state and sown acreage, growing of monsoon and summer paddy, oil crops, production of rice, land reclamation, digging of drainages in Mebaung and Naunglon Creek regions, implementation of tasks and targets for 2002-2003.
In his speech, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye said at a time when all-out efforts are being made for the country to develop, it is important for Kayin State to develop like other states and divisions simultaneously. As Kayin State is rich in land and water resources, concerted efforts are to be made for development of agriculture sector and growing of rice must be extended to ensure local rice sufficiency. Seasonal crops as well as other crops such as coffee and pepper are to be grown on a commercial scale. Moreover, livestock breeding tasks are to be carried out jointly with agriculture tasks so that all regions in Kayin State will develop rapidly, he pointed out.
Continuous and correct observations are to be made for progress of per capita income, education and health sectors and endeavors are to be made for simultaneous development in all regions. The State has laid down and implemented plans for equitable development of all regions in the country, and Kayin State is to implement development projects relating to the 24 development regions and rural development tasks harmoniously.
The objective of the state is to bring about harmonious and equitable development across the nation, to narrow the gap between rural and urban areas and bring about development of rural areas where the majority of people reside, and enhance the living standard of national brethren at border areas. The government wants all the regions to develop equally. All national races living through thick and thin in various parts of the Union including Kayin State are brethren.
The Government has laid down plans and taken steps for development of all parts of the nation, where all national races reside. Accordingly, all will have to make concerted and collective efforts for successful implementation of the project.
Furthermore, while making sustained and relentless efforts for regional and national development, peace and tranquillity in the region is required. Only when there is peace and tranquillity in the region will efforts for development of economic, education, health and transport sectors be carried out.
Thus, to forge peace and tranquillity in the whole Kayin State, concerted efforts need to be made to see that the remaining armed groups to return to the legal fold and bring an end to armed insurgency.
Then, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye greeted those present at the ceremony. Next, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party arrived at the 4,000-ton cement plant in Myainggalay, Hpa-an Township at 11.30 am and inspected the plant.
Then, they inspected storage of raw materials for cement bags and production process of cement bags. Member of the State Peace and Development Council Quartermaster-General Lt-Gen Thiha Thura Tin Aung Myint Oo reported on the salient points of the production process.
Afterwards, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party inspected functions of the plant and putting the cement into the bags. They then viewed round the central control room of the plant.
The cement plant produced and distributed cement on commercial scale beginning 1 November 2001. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party arrived in Papun by helicopter in the afternoon. They were welcomed there by Tactical Operations Commander Col Khin Kyu and officials.
After that, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye met with Tatmadawmen and their families of battalions and units at the hall of the local battalion, and gave instructions. Meanwhile the ministers, who accompanied Vice-Senior General Maung Aye, met with departmental officials of Papun Township, members of the Union Solidarity and Development Association and social organizations at Moe Hein Hall.
Chairman of Papun Township Peace and Development Council U Min Swe and officials reported on work being carried out for development of the township and requirements to be attended to. The ministers fulfilled the requirements.
Next, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye made a speech. He said that the Government has been fulfilling the requirements for development of the regions, where there is less development like Papun. Local people and departmental personnel will have to make collective efforts for regional development.
Efforts for regional development could have been made with added momentum if there is no armed insurgency in the region, and all are to make efforts in harmony to bring about peace and tranquillity in the region.
Then, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye greeted those present at the ceremony. Next, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party viewed round Papun. They then inspected Papun Basic Education High School and greeted the headmaster and teachers. Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and party then arrived at Hsandawshin Kyaikhtiyoe Pagoda in Kyaikhto Township by helicopter at 3.30 pm. They offered flowers and lights to the pagoda. They then offered Shwethingan to the pagoda.
Afterwards, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye presented cash towards the funds of the pagoda and in the visitors' book. Then, members of the Pagoda Board of Trustees presented a picture of the pagoda to Vice- Senior General Maung Aye. Then, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye greeted the pilgrims. Then, they left the pagoda by helicopter and arrived back here in the evening.
Member of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Maung Bo of the Ministry of Defence, who accompanied Vice-Senior General Maung Aye, together with Director-General of Health Department Dr Wan Maung inspected Hpa-an General Hospital and spoke words of encouragement to the patients on 14 December.
Then, Lt-Gen Maung Bo met with Kayin State Health Officer Dr Myo Lwin and Medical Superintendent Dr Kyaw Oo and hospital staff at the meeting hall of the hospital and attended to the needs.
Likewise, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Central Organizing Committee of Myanmar War Veterans Organization Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Thein Sein together with Vice-Chairman of the committee Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun met with members of state, district and township WVOs at the meeting hall of Kayin State Peace and Development Council in Hpa-an on 14 December.
At the meeting, Adjutant-General Lt-Gen Thein Sein urged the WVO members to make sustained and relentless efforts in nation-building endeavours and try their utmost to become qualified ones on whom the people can rely. Then, Vice-Senior General Maung Aye cordially greeted the WVO members.

Yangon, 16 Dec - The Third Traditional Medicine and Medical Equipment Exhibition, organized by Traditional Medicine Department of the Ministry of Health, was opened at Tatmadaw Convention Hall on U Wisara Road this morning, attended by Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt.
Member of the Traditional Medicine Council Chairman of Myanmar Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association Sayagyi U Nyan Lwin, council members Sayagyi U Aung Si and Sayagyi U Soe Hlaing formally opened the exhibition.
Then, the Secretary-1 and party and the guests viewed the booths at the exhibition.
Altogether 136 booths including booths of Traditional Medicine Department, Traditional Medicine Research Unit and Myanmar Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association, the medical research booth of Medical Research Department (Lower Myanmar), booths of the Ministry of Forestry, the Ministry of Industry-1, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, booths of private traditional medicine producers and entrepreneurs and machines for producing modern traditional medicines were displayed at the exhibition.
Kinds of natural forest and herbal plants in Myanmar, undertakings related to the medicinal plants by Forest Department and facts about Hsaytaunggyi in Ye Township, Mon State, were shown at the booth of the Ministry of Forestry. Likewise, Myanma medicinal plants, rare traditional medicinal herbs and production process of Myinkhwa essence (Hydrocotyle asiatica) were also exhibited at the Ministry of Industry-1 booth. The facts about medicinal plants included in the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation booth. Similarly, educative talks on health care services, various kinds of traditional medicine courses in states and divisions, projects of the traditional medicine research unit, samples of dried herbal plants to be used in curing the six diseases, identification and storage of the herbal plants were displayed at the Traditional Medicine Department booth. The booth on the aims and organizational set-up of the Myanmar Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association is also included in the exhibition. At the traditional medicine research booth, research works, packs of traditional medicine and works of the laboratory, test of traditional TB medicine on the patients and other medicine and medicinal research works were shown.
The raw materials of traditional medicine and culture of bacteria included in the Medical Research Department (Lower Myanmar). The exhibition will be kept open for the public free of charge from 9 am to 6 pm daily up to 26 December.

Dinner hosted in honour of delegates to Third Myanma Traditional Medicine Practitioners' Conference
Yangon, 16 Dec - Chairman of National Health Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt hosted a dinner in honour of the delegates to the Third Myanma Traditional Medicine Practitioners' Conference at Mya Yeik Nyo Royal Hotel in Bahan Township at 6.30 pm today.
Before and during the dinner, A-1 Soe Myint modern music troupe entertained the audience with modern music. After the dinner, the Secretary-1 cordially met with the delegates of states and divisions.

Minister inspects construction tasks in Ayeyawady Division
Yangon, 16 Dec - Minister for Construction Maj-Gen Saw Tun left Yangon by car on an inspection tour of Twantay-Dalla-Kungyangon-Dedaye road this morning. The Yangon Division Superintending Engineer and the Yangon South District Senior Engineer reported on tasks being carried out on Twantay-Dalla-Kungyangon road in the open season. At the Kungyangon Township Engineer's Office, the District Senior Engineer reported on progress of construction work of the road. The minister gave instructions on repaving tasks, road construction, supervision tasks to meet the set standard.
Then, the minister and party inspected the Kungyangon-Dedaye road. Next, they arrived at Ayeyawady Bridge (Dedaye) construction project. Deputy Superintending Engineer U Khin Maung Win reported on construction tasks and progress of work. Then, the minister gave necessary instructions. Afterwards, the minister and party inspected paving of the tarmac on the approach road, construction of the pedestrian lanes, building of the approach bridge and the main bridge and the archways.
Ayeyawady Bridge (Dedaye), being built by the Bridge Construction Special Group-8, is 4,088.3 feet long. The upper structure of the bridge will be built of steel frame; the approach bridge is of reinforced concrete, reinforced concrete bore piles and piles. The bridge will have 28 feet wide motorway and six feet wide pedestrian lane on either side. The bridge will have 350 feet wide and 36 feet high clearance. The bridge can withstand 60-ton loads.

Photographical Technician Course opened
Yangon, 16 Dec - A ceremony to open the photographical technician course of Information and Public Relations Department of Ministry of Information was held at the training hall of News and Periodicals Enterprise on Pansodan Street at 1 pm today.
Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan delivered an opening speech on the occasion. He said the course conducted with three objectives is important not only for the trainees but for IPRD and the ministry. The three objectives are to promote the photographical knowledge and make a plan for the future, to develop mental ability and efficiency of the trainees and to realize the objectives of the department and the ministry. He instructed the trainers and officials to try their best for the successful realization of the objectives of the course and urged the trainees to try to make a thorough study of the lectures. Altogether 60 trainees of district and township IPRDs are attending the two-week course.
Minister inspects poultry farms in Hlegu
Yangon, 16 Dec - Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Brig-Gen Maung Maung Thein yesterday inspected broiler farm and vegetable plantation in the Farm Camp in Ngasutaung in Hlegu Township and gave necessary instructions. He also inspected layer and duck farms in Ngasutaung and gave instructions on timely distribution to the markets.
The minister and party went to poultry farm in Pyinmapin in Mingaladon Township and gave necessary instructions. He also attended to the needs on construction of feedstuff factory, and farming of broilers and layers in states and divisions.
Minister inspects cooperative works in Hlegu Township
Yangon, 16 Dec - Minister for Cooperatives Lt-Gen Tin Ngwe and arrived at Phaunggyi Central Cooperative College in Hlegu Township yesterday. Director-General of Cooperative Department and Chairman of Hlegu Township Peace and Development Council reported on measures for development of Natsin-in Village.
The minister gave instructions on supervision of rural development, establishment of model village and requirements. The minister and party inspected the plots, models of houses and drainage system. The minister proceeded to cooperative agricultural development camp and met 19 villagers who got new plots. The minister and party then went to Mazin Industrial Cooperative Society in Bago where officials reported on undertakings and functions of the society.
Yangon, 16 Dec - The opening ceremony of Basic Printing Course (3/2002) GTC Printing Factory of the Printing and Publishing Enterprise of the Ministry of Information was held at the printing house in Insein Township this morning. Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan attended the ceremony.
Deputy Minister for Information Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan made an address. He said that if the tasks carry out by combining good morale and skillful, success will be achieved. Therefore, trainees are need to be trained to become skillful staff but also lifting up of their morale, he added. He also urged the trainees to try hard in accord with the aims of the course and to observe the modern printing technics to make efforts for discharging duties after the course. Altogether 22 trainees of the News and Periodicals Enterprise and Ministry of Defence are attending the eight-week course.
Improvement of river systems in Shan State (North) inspected
Yangon, 16 Dec - Minister for Transport Maj-Gen Hla Myint Swe, on 14 December went to Mognkoe in Muse District in Shan State (North) and inspected the flow of Mongkoe Creek which is on the China-Myanmar border. The officials concerned reported to the minister on the construction of retaining wall to prevent Mongkoe Creek from erosion and progress of works to change the current.
The minister and party inspected progress of the construction of retaining wall which is 200 feet long and constructed by the DWRIRS at the Nantyan Creek in Kyugok (Pangsang).
In the afternoon, they went to Naungtain Jetty in Namhkam and inspected the ferries. They then inspected the construction of retaining wall at the Shwele River near Hosaung Village, Muse Township, to prevent the border post No (84-2) and farmlands from erosion and left necessary instructions.
Paper reading session of Traditional Medicine Practitioners' Conference continues
Yangon, 16 Dec - The paper reading session of The Third Myanmar Traditional Medicine Practitioners' Conference continued for the third day at the Pyidaungsu Hall in Kyaikkasan Grounds this afternoon. Present were Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein.
Myanmar traditional medicine practitioners submitted eight papers on therapy, potency of medicinal plants and knowledge about traditional medicines. Director-General of Medical Science Department Dr Maung Maung Wint presided over the first session with members of Panel of Chairmen Physicians U Soe Hlaing and U Aung Si. Traditional medicine practitioner U Ba Than of Pale Township, U Nyan Tun of Mandalay, Daw Lay Myint of Yangon and Director of Traditional Medicine Department Dr Daw Myat Myat Ohn Khin submitted the papers.
Director-General of Traditional Medicine Department Prof Dr Thein Swe presided over the second session with members of Panel of Chairmen Physicians U Nyan Tun and U Soe Hlaing. Lt-Col Lwin Ko of Defence Services General Hospital in Meiktila, U Maung Nyan of Yangon, U Mann Chit of Kalay and U Ko Ko Lay of Hpa-an submitted the papers. The delegates then took part in the discussions. After the discussions the minister, the deputy minister and physicians observed Myanma traditional medicinal plants, leaves and roots. The paper reading session continues tomorrow.

All-round renovation of Sule Pagoda coordinated
Yangon, 16 Dec - A work coordination meeting on all-round renovation of Sule Pagoda's eastern and northern stairways was held at the office of the pogada board of trustees this morning, attended by Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander of Yangon Command Maj-Gen Myint Swe.
Brig-Gen Myo Myint reported on Myanmar traditional handicrafts, and Myanmar handicraft master U Tin Ohn and party on wood and cement works. After hearing the reports, the commander gave instructions and inspected the repair of the eastern stairways. He also paid the pagoda and attended to the requirements.

Cash donation presentation ceremony held
Yangon, 16 Dec - A ceremony to present K 2 million cash donation to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement by the wellwisher of Jofukuin Temple Manihoto Koyasan Japan was held at the training school for the girls of Social Welfare Department on Maykha Street in Mayangon Township this evening.
First wellwisher Mr Z-Naka Shita of Jofukuin Temple Manihoto Koyasan Japan explained the purpose of the donation and presented cash doanation K 2 million. Minister Maj-Gen Sein Htwa accepted the donation and presented certificate of honour to the wellwisher and spoke words of thanks.
Trade Fair 2002 of Myanmar-China Border Trade opened
Yangon, 16 Dec - Minister for Commerce Brig-Gen Pyi Sone attended the opening of Myanmar-China Border Trade Fair-2002 in Muse in northern Shan State yesterday.
Also present on the occasion were Vice-Secretary of Yunnan Province of the People's Republic of China Mr Shao Qi Wei, members of the central committee for the holding of the trade fair, officials of the respective work committees, provincial heads of China, local authorities, businessmen of the two countries, members of social organizations and others.
Director-General of the Border Trade Department U Nay Win and Deputy Director-General of the Bureau of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation of Yunnan Province of China Mr Li Jia Shou formally opened the trade fair. Then, Brig-Gen Pyi Sone made an opening speech and Mr Shao Qi Wei extended greetings. Next, vocalists sang songs in Myanmar as well as in Chinese to mark the trade fair. After the entertainment of "Kyaukse elephant dance", the opening ceremony came to an end. Following the opening ceremony, the minister and guests viewed round the trade fairs, which will be held from 15 to 19 December. On display in 250 booths at the trade fair are gems and jewels, agricultural produce, finished wood, marine products, medicines, consumer goods, and cosmetics.

Danger of Drugs and Drug Addicts Treatment Course opened
Yangon, 16 Dec - The Danger of Narcotic Drugs and Drug Addicts Treatment Multiplier Course of Yangon East District was opened at the office of Yangon East District Peace and Development Council in Thingangyun Township this morning.
Physicians and officials gave educative talks on the danger of narcotic drugs and treatment of drug addicts and measures for making the 15-year narcotic drug plan a success. Present were district-level departmental officials, local authorities of 14 townships and officials of NGOs.
70 acres of poppy fields destroyed
Yangon, 16 Dec A combined team comprising Tatmadawmen of local battalion, members of the Military Intelligence, Hopang Special Anti-drug Squad, members of Shan State (North) Special region-2, departmental officials and local people on 25 and 27 November destroyed 70 acres of poppy fields around Htuhtutaw Village in Hopang Township, Shan State (North).
