Secretary-1 unveils stone plaque of Union National Races Village at opening ceremony
It is the national duty for all national races to serve Our Three Main National Causes
The National Races Village was established with the aim of understanding good foundations of culture, customs and traditions of national races and further strengthening of Union SpiritYangon, 28 Dec - A ceremony to open the Union National Races Village, established by the Ministry for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs, was held at the village near Thanlyin Bridge in Thakayta Township at 8 am today.
Chairman of the Work Committee for Progress of Border Areas and National Races Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt attended the ceremony and unveiled the stone plaque of the village.
Staff Officer (News/External) Daw Ling Maung Pang of MRTV-3 acted as master of ceremonies. First, Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt formally opened the Union National Races Village by cutting the ribbon carried by Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Chin, Bamar, Mon, Rakhine and Shan national belles.
Then, the Secretary-1 unveiled the stone plaque of the village. The Secretary-1 then had the documentary photo taken together with the national races in front of the archway of the village.
Next, the Secretary-1 cordially conversed with members of the traditional literature and cultural troupes, the traditional dance troupe members and national races.
Afterwards, the ceremony to open the Union National Races Village was held at the assembly hall.
Minister for Progress of Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs Col Thein Nyunt reported on matters related to the Union National Races Village.
Minister Col Thein Nyunt delivered a speech. He said the stake driving ceremony for the national races village project was held on a 111 acres plot in Ward 10 in Thakayta Township at the mouth of Bago River near Yangon-Thanlyin Bridge on 25 April 1995. Forty percent of the project area is covered with swamps at high tide. The amount of the earth work is great and it is hard to grow trees because of salty water. Due to these difficulties, the private companies failed to implement the project. The ten acres of land for Myanma traditional handicraft village were handed over to the Fair Trade Co Ltd under the BOT system in August 2000. The remaining 101 acres of the project were handed over to Progress of Border Areas and National Races Department. Plans were laid down and implemented for the opening of the national races village within two years.
The project site is located near Bago River at 17 feet above sea level and the type of the earth is clay soil. The average rainfall of the year is 106". The maximum temperature in April is about 36.7¡C and the minimum temperature in January is about 18.5¡C. The climate is hot and wet and mangrove trees grow in the region.
Small lakes similar to the famous lakes in Myanmar were dug and roads were built and hills were created in accord with the instructions of Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council. The 25 lakes can store about 35 millions gallons rain water for watering the plants. Water in the Bago River is salty from January to May. Fresh water stored in the lakes can be used at that time.
The 31,487 feet canals were built in order to flow water from Thakayta Township during monsoon and to prevent the flow of salty water from Bago River in summer. Four sluice gates were installed in the embankment along the Bago River. Flowing of rain water through the villages reduces salty rate.
The national races village was surrounded by fences with four gates and a 300 KVA transformer was installed at the village. There are seven artesian wells and seven water tanks for water supply.
In connection with the construction of traditional houses, the minister said there are over 100 national races living in the country. It is a significant fact that they have lived with fraternity and unity for successive periods.
It is the national duty for all national races to uphold Our Three Main National Causes non-disintegration of the Union, non-disintegration of national solidarity and perpetuation of sovereignty. The national races village was established with the aim of understanding the good foundations of culture, customs and traditions of national races and further strengthening of the Union Spirit and national solidarity spirit. One can study the customs and traditions of polite, gentle national races at one place.
Traditional houses depicting the everyday life of national races were built by national race carpenters in February 2002 under the coordination among organizations in the respective regions and literature and culture committees for national races in Yangon.
Prominent landmarks such as Htokekant ordination hall in Rakhine Village, Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda in Mon Village, Zwekabin Mountain in Kayin Village, Reed Lake in Chin Village, Mt Khakaborazi in Kachin Village, Inlay Lake in Shan Village and Taungkwe Pagoda in Kayah Village were constructed in accord with the instructions of the Secretary-1 during his inspection tour of the project site on 31 August 2002. He also gave instructions on upgrading village ring roads to concrete ones and cultivation of local crops and pepper.
Visitors can study everyday life of national races at their traditional houses. A National Race Traditional Cultural Museum will be built for wider study of their culture and customs.
