Dhammayangyi

Dhammayangyi Pagoda is the most massive-looking temples in Bagan. It was built in late 12th century by King Narathu (1167-1170).

Local legend says that the work was so demanding, the king mandated the mortar less brickwork fit together so tightly so that even a pin couldn't pass between any two bricks. If a pin could penetrate in between the bricks, then the slaves were killed assumed as they lack of efficient work. Small open places near the top of the passage show intact stucco relief's and paintings, suggesting that work on the structure had been completed.
