Mahabodhi

Mahabodhi Pagoda was built by King Nantaungmya during 1211-1234. The pyramidal spire, covered in niches which enclose seated Buddha figures, rises from a square block.

The temple is said to be built as the temple of Bodhgaya in India. It was taken the idea which commemorates the spot where the Buddha attained enlightenment,

Stupas of this nature only appeared during the Late Bagan period; they were most common in the city of Salay further south.
