Shwesandaw Pagoda

Shwesandaw Pagoda was built by King Anawrahta during the late 11th Century. This monument has five terraces with terracotta plaques showing the scenes from the jatakas. The zedi bell rises from two octagonal bases which top the five square terraces.

This was the first monument in Bagan to feature stairways leading from the square bottom terraces to the round base of the stupa itself. This stupa supposedly enshrines a Buddha hair relic brought back from Thaton.

The hti, which was toppled by the earthquake, can still be seen lying on the far side of the compound. A new one was fitted soon after tie quake.

The upper terrace of Shwesandaw Paya has become a popular sunset-viewing spot.

Close to Shwesandaw Paya stands Lawkahteikpan Pahto - a small but interesting Middle period gu (cave) containing excellent frescoes and inscriptions in both Burmese and Mon.
