Thatbyinnyu Pagoda

Thatbyinnyu Pagoda is remarked to be constructed during the mid 12th century and built by King Alaung Sithu. It rises up to 61 metres.

Its monumental size and verticality make it a classic example of Bagan's Middle period. Indentations for 539 jataka plaques encircle the terraces.

There is a maze-like structure internal to this monument. One can go from inner passafes to the top terrace. Then from the main eastern entrance ascended stairways lead to another part of the pagoda. There are steep stairways to climb up and down inside the building. But the top part are prohibited to climb.

In a monastery compound slightly to the south-west of the Thatbyinnyu you can see the stone supports which once held the temple's huge bronze bell. North-east of the temple stands a small 'tally zedi', which was built of one brick for every 10,000 bricks used in the main temple.
