Mawlamyaing

Mawlamyaing is the capital city of the Mon State and a big trading centre of Myanmar. The city's population is about 300,000 and consists of Mon, Kayin, Bamar, Indians and some Chinese.

Mawlamyaing is the third largest city in the country and is the second largest seaport. Mawlamyaing is an old Mon city, its original Mon name was "Mont me lein".Referring to the legendary Mon king who had his single eye destroyed, it was named as Mont me lein.

By the treaty of Yandabo signed in 1826, which ended the First Anglo-Myanm War, Mawlamyaing was ceded to the British. It was then just a village until Sitke Maun, Htaw Lay, mayor of Dala town, brought over 10,000 Mon people with him in more thai 200 boats to settle there. Later, commerce with foreign parts made it develop into a business centre.

The town is situated on the left bank of the Thanlwin River, before it debouches into the sea 28 miles below the town, it is bounded by hills on the east. The town generally slopes down to the west and its length fronting the river is much greater than it breadth. Being near the sea and at the confluence of four rivers, it enjoys an equitable climate which, combined with a fertile soil, has promoted the cultivation of grain, variety cash crops and orchards. A considerable amount of teak, rice, rubber, and fruits such as durians, mangosteen, pineapple, rambutan, mango and cashew are produced.

Mawlamyaing enjoys good communication links with Yangon, being connected by road, rail, sea and air. Now that the bridge over the Thanlwin River, has completed, it is also accessible by car within a few hours from Yangon.

Road and rail communications from Mawlamyaing along the Thanintharyi coastal strip are also being extended and improved. Soon railway service will be extended from Ye southwards to Myeik, while the motor road is being improved to establish smooth road communications with Kawthaung at the southern extremity.

Kyaikthanlan, Mahamyatmuni and the Ziinamanaung pagodas are much venerated for their antiquity. Mawlamyaing is famous for the Transition into New Year (Thingyan) water festival which is held in April for a whole week while the Maungmagan celebration of giving offertories to monks which takes place during October has always been well attended.

Short trips by car to Thanbyuzayat which anchors the infamous "death railway" on the Myanmar side, Setse beach , Kyaikkhami and Kyaikmaraw can be taken from Mawlamyaing, while crossing the river to Chaungzon acquaints one with the enterprising craftsmen of Ywalut and a chance to sample their products.
