Yangon International Airport
Yangon International Airport is the primary international airport of Myanmar and is located in Mingaladon Township, at 15 km North of downtown Yangon.
The airport was built in 1947 by the Calcutta Metropolitan Airports Authority. When it was built, the airport was regarded as the best in South East Asia.
Now, the new Yangon International Airport was successfully opened in 25th May, 2007. The runway has also been extended to 11,200ft to accommodate heavier aircraft.
The new terminal of Yangon International Airport can be able to accommodate bigger aircraft and handle more passengers. The runway extension will enable Boeing 747-400 airplanes to use the airport. The work on extending the runway from 8100 feet to 11,200 feet has done. The runway extension was part of an upgrade which began in April 2003. The upgrade will nearly double the size of the airport terminal.
The length of the two-storey building will be increased from 340 feet to 832 feet and its width from 140 feet to 200 feet. The expansion of the terminal will enable the airport to handle 2.7 million passengers a year. The existing terminal will be used for domestic flights and the new terminal will handle passengers on international flights. The new terminal building will be capable of handling 900 arriving and 900 departing passengers simultaneously. At the peak hours the airport can handle 5 air planes per hour. Arriving and departing passengers will be processed on separate floors to avoid congestion. The upgrade will also see the terminal equipped with an automated baggage handling system, an integrated check-in system and four air bridges capable of handling four Boeing 747s at the same time. The new building will also include special lounges for use by government officials and business people and there will be a two-storey car park with space for about 340 vehicles. As part of the project, the airport apron will be widened and lengthened by 600 feet in either direction.
