info In the capital city of Yangon, you will can see the magnificent fabulous Shwedagon Pagoda (ရွှေတိဂုံဘုရား) from almost anywhere.
The Shwedagon Pagoda sits upon holy Singuttara Hill, visible from miles away. Shwedagon is the most sacred pagoda as it enshrines the relics of the three earlier buddhas and the eight hair relics of Gautama Buddha. Legend has it that the Shwedagon Pagoda is 2500 years old. In the beginning, the pagoda was only 8.2 metres in height, but after many rebuilding and renovating throughout the history, it now rises up to nearly 110 metres (360 feet), with the perimeter measuring 432.8 metres (1,420 feet). The pagoda is plated in gold and the tip of the stupa is covered with 4531 diamonds, and among them, the largest one is a 72-carat diamond. If you take a look carefully, you will see that the pagoda has an octagonal base, a bell-shaped dome and conical-shaped spire. Currently, the pagoda is administered by the Board of Trustees of Shwedagon Pagoda.
