St. Mary’s CathedralSt. Mary’s Cathedral

info St. Mary’s Cathedral (စိန့်မယ်ရီဘုရားကျောင်း) is situated on a 15 acres of land on Bo Aung Kyaw Street in Botahtaung Township, Yangon.

It was designed in a Neo-Gothic design by Joseph Cuypers, a Dutch architect and it is the largest cathedral in Myanmar. After a land grant from the Government of India (as Myanmar was under British Colonial Rule at the time), its construction began in 1895 and was finished in 1899. The interior of the Cathedral is richly decorated with some outstanding examples of featured exquisite stained glass windows. The cathedral has been through many disasters and damages. In 1930, there was an earthquake in Rangoon causing some minor damages to the cathedral. During the World War II, there was the Japanese Invasion which the cathedral withstood. However, the cathedral's beautiful stained glasses were damaged during the 1944 Allied Invasion of Rangoon and again during the Cyclone Nargis in 2008.
